Service Station

Privacy policy

Last updated 1 November 2026

Service Station is an app for logging the motorway and A-road services you stop at. This policy explains what it collects, why, where it's kept and what you can do about it. The short version: it keeps your sign-in email and the visits you log, it uses your location on your phone to find the services you're at, and it doesn't track you, show adverts or sell anything about you.

Who is responsible

Service Station is made by Dan Towers, a sole developer in the United Kingdom, who is the data controller for the information described here. Contact: support@servicestations.app.

What the app collects and why

Your account

Your email address, so you can sign in with a one-time code (there are no passwords) and so your visits are kept with your account across devices. Lawful basis: providing the service you asked for (contract).

The visits you log

For each visit: which services, the date and time, and anything you add — a star rating, notes and photos. For stops found by auto-detect, also when you arrived and left and how long you stayed. This is stored with your account and is private to you. Lawful basis: contract.

Your location

Correction reports

If you choose to report a problem with a services, or a missing one: what you said is wrong, your note, and for a missing services the place you marked or your location at the time. Reports are linked to your account so we can follow up and spot abuse. We use them to correct the map data, which can mean editing OpenStreetMap, a public map; we never include your name or email in those edits. Lawful basis: our legitimate interest in keeping the map accurate.

Things the app doesn't do

No adverts, no analytics or tracking tools, no selling or sharing of your data for marketing, and no push-notification service: the “Are you here?” notification is created on your phone.

Who else handles your data

We use these services to run the app. Each processes data only to provide its service to us.

How long it's kept

Keeping it secure

Everything travels over encrypted connections. Each account's data can only be read by that account, and photos are kept in private storage that needs a short-lived signed link to view.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask to see the data we hold about you, have it corrected, have it deleted, receive a copy in a portable format, or object to or restrict how it's used. Email support@servicestations.app from the address on your account; we'll reply within one month. You can delete your account yourself in the app at any time.

If you're unhappy with how your data is handled, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, though we'd appreciate the chance to put it right first.

Children

Service Station isn't intended for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top will change. If a change affects how your data is used, we'll tell you in the app first.
